ANTS in the SW Head Start (Neuro Sim)
We opened the Peninsula Simulation Suite at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth in May 2008. We have the very latest adult and paediatric Manikin Simulators from Laerdal and a high tech video system for student debriefing (Studiocode) with which we are able to offer a wide range of simulation based education.
Our aim is to be at the heart of the medical staff’s educational experience, the simulation suite is on site and set up with the same equipment that they would be using everyday on the wards and in the theatres. We have a set up that is portable and try where possible to set the manikin in the workplace. This brings together all the best elements of a simulation centre based course and in situ team training
In addition to ensuring that the medical staff’s Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes are appropriate, we teach the Non-Technical Skills that are at the heart of effective Team and Crisis Resource Management to those at the front line of acute medical care. We run a simulation curriculum for the Foundation Doctors based on one we developed in conjunction with the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry for the final year medical students. We have a rolling programme of multidisciplinary team training for the theatre teams in their specialist groups, conducted in both in our sim suite and in the theatres themselves.
